Cybercrime: Bad Guys, Ethical Hackers and the Law

Description

What is cybercrime? Who are the hackers? What makes an ethical hacker? Is ethical hacking always legal? Come along to this online interactive session to explore and the law governing the use of computers and digital devices and to better understand what is legal and illegal to do with computers.

In this session, you will learn about what hacking is from a legal perspective. You’ll be introduced to the main offences under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and will have a chance to think like ‘the Jury’ and deliver guilty/not guilty verdicts. We will then debate how good the law on hacking currently is and whether it adequately distinguishes between ethical and unethical behaviour.

Learn about the LegalTech technologies that are increasingly used in the legal industry as well as in the justice system. LegalTech, or LawTech is increasingly used to help aid practitioners perform their tasks faster and more accurately, as well as to facilitate access to justice for citizens. We will discuss the basics about key emerging technologies as they apply in the legal field (machine learning, explainable AI, and blockchain). In addition, we will address their pros and cons, legal and ethical challenges, risks and opportunities. This session does not presuppose any specific technical background.

Your Digital Double: Surveillance, Privacy and Data Rights

How much of your personal data is “out there” on the internet? Do we even notice when we are being ‘watched’ through the apps and technology we use?

In this online session, you will learn about surveillance, privacy and data rights through a legal lens. Together, we will explore our experiences of sharing personal data with people we know, people we don’t know, corporations and public authorities. You will learn about the right to privacy and your rights under data protection legislation. As well as developing an understanding of the law, we will discuss some of its current limitations.
